Join me to protest the “Stimulus”

Posted by jccaldara on Feb 16 2009 | Capitol Crazies, Economics, Events, Transparency

President Obama is flying his corporate jet to Denver to sign a bill putting my children into debt. I want to give him a proper Mile High welcome. The Independence Institute, along with Americans for Prosperity and other groups promoting sanity, are organizing a protest tomorrow, Tuesday, at noon at the west steps of the state capitol, and I hope you’ll be there.

We’ll have over-sized checks you can sign to show your family’s $30,000 commitment to the bill. I’ll be joined by Michelle Malkin, Mike Coffman, Bob Beauprez, Jim Pfaff from AFP and many others. I’m not usually one for public protests, because like so many on our side, I have a day job. But I just can’t allow this huge push down the slippery slope to socialism be signed here in Denver without standing up and saying, “hell no.” I wish to go on the record. Let the world know there were at least some of us who didn’t want to put our kids into debt for a bill that spends more than has been spent in the entire conflict in Iraq

Please come to the $30,000 a plate pork roast! And tell a friend!

A simple question to ask your congressmen

Posted by jccaldara on Feb 14 2009 | Capitol Crazies, Government Largess, Transparency

Democrats, and Obama in particular, love to talk about transparency.  Take for instance the “stimulus” bill.  The House of Representatives voted unanimously on a resolution guaranteeing that they would wait 48 hours to vote on the compromise Stimulus bill with the bill to be made available “in an electronic, searchable, and downloadable form for at least 48 hours.”  Well they got the compromise bill about midnight Thursday night and voted on it the next day with no chance for any member to have read the nearly 1100-page monstrosity.

Well at least now we know that congressional resolutions have absolutely no meaning.

Why the rush?  What was worth breaking a resolution over?  Well, maybe the “stimulus” was so vital and the “crisis” so dangerous they needed to pass it right away to make it law ASAP.  But wait a sec.  The big O isn’t going to sign the bill into law until Tuesday!  If the House didn’t break its resolution (did I mention the resolution passed unanimously?) it wouldn’t have changed a damn thing.

There can be ONLY one reason the House Democrats broke the resolution.  They didn’t want anyone – taxpayers, press, perhaps mostly themselves – to get a chance to look at this thing before they voted.

Might I kindly suggest you ask your Democratic congressman a simple question, “seeing that honoring the vote YOU made to put the stimulus bill online for 48 hours before voting on it (page H1096 in the Congressional Record) would not have delayed the president signing it into law, why didn’t you respect me enough to give us all 48 hours to see what we’re paying for?”  When he avoids the question the first time, don’t be shy to ask again.  Love for you to post the responses.

Keynes Was Probably Buried in a Blue Shirt

Posted by jccaldara on Feb 10 2009 | Government Largess, PPC

If you’re accidentally wearing blue, take your shirt off. Little Eddie from Ed Is Watching alerted me to the American Federation of Teachers “wear blue in support of the stimulus bill day.” (Which is today). With the choice of such a ubiquitous color, millions of people are unknowingly showing support for a gigantic Keynesian scheme to redistribute wealth and push America further into the red. Wait a second. Wouldn’t wearing red make more sense then? Or at least wearing “I <3 the Federal Deficit” shirts makes more sense than blue…

The Future of Newspapers

Posted by jccaldara on Feb 05 2009 | Idiot Box (TV Show)

The Rocky Mountain News is supposed to celebrate its 150th Anniversary this spring, but according to some reports the paper may not even survive the month. This week on Independent Thinking, I go one-on-one with Rocky Mountain News editor John Temple to discuss the future of Denver’s daily newspapers. Tune in this Friday night at 8:30 p.m. to KBDI Channel 12; repeated the following Tuesday evening at 5 p.m.

What… Me?

Posted by jccaldara on Feb 04 2009 | PPC, Purely Personal

Thanks to Face the State flexing their Open Records Act muscles, they obtained an email from a Denver attorney James Lyons that alluded to my blood-thirsty love of the night and my much maligned living dead persona. In referencing Independence Institute employees, James says,

…However, I fear that, like the social vampires they are, they will seek to rise from the grave. I am hopeful that you are standing guard – wooden stake and mallet in hand.

My only question is… am I “social vampire” because, while frequently moonlighting as a blood sucking creature, I also enjoy a night out on the town and can be seen at all the hottest parties? Or am I a “social vampire” in that I only enjoy blood-sucking activities while in the presence of other vampires, where I tend to feel the nagging pull of peer pressure?

The Dirty Dozen Tomorrow!

Posted by jccaldara on Feb 02 2009 | Events

Tomorrow the Independence Institute is hosting The Dirty Dozen, minus Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson of course. This particular Dirty Dozen is less concerned with the Germans than with the United States Supreme Court. In this presentation, Chip Mellor from the Institute for Justice will outline the 12 court cases that radically changed the course of American history away from constitutional government and towards the “living document” justification for the ever-growing, intrusive state we have today. He will of course be drawing material from his popular book of the same name (check it out). Make sure you RSVP this instant, as this event almost fully booked! And for those feeling lucky that day, we will be giving away a few books!

Reception will be at 5:30, presentation following at 6pm.

Take a few minutes and listen to this iVoices.org podcast I was able to get with presenter Chip Mellor. In it, he gives a little sneak preview of what’s in store for tomorrow night.
