Join your friends at the Independence Institute for our first ever Vern Bickel Award Cocktail Party! We’re partying next Thursday, November 17 at Cableland in Denver. Cableland, as you may know, is the 19,500-square-foot mansion built by Denver philanthropist and Cable TV pioneer Bill Daniels. We will be honoring Chuck Asay, retiring political cartoonist at the Colorado Springs Gazette. We’re also thrilled to present special guest Henry Payne, political cartoonist at the Detroit News.

Celebrate with us while you record the Broncos game. That way you can fast forward when the Jets score and only watch the Broncos play their “duck-and run-as-fast-as-you-can-Tebow” style offense. The party wraps up at 8PM, so you’ll be home in time to see Rex Ryan eat coach John Fox!

Happy Earth Day!

Did you know “Mother Earth” has civil rights? And that soon her self-appointed representatives can bring charges against other earthlings (that’d be us) who infringe on her rights in something called a “Ministry of Mother Earth”? I didn’t believe it either until I read this article outlining the latest brilliance coming out of the UN.

Assuming this treaty passes the earth can send her subpoenas to my attorneys c/o Independence Institute.

Can one plead the 5th to driving my SUV over the limit with the A/C blasting and the windows down? In any event we are starting my legal defense fund.

In other news, the 2011 Colorado legislative session is just about over. Let’s see if the Republicans can live up to their campaign promises about protecting freedom and free markets in the face of some questionable bills like: SCR-01 which not only threatens a citizen’s right to petition their government. And don’t forget about the enormous amount of corporate welfare coming to natural gas producers and Xcel thanks to a couple of bills that fleece ratepayers and have passed out of committee. Finally, we’ve got to deal with a potential state health insurance exchange. Health Care Policy Center director Linda Gorman laid out the case that these exchanges do not increase consumer choice and only make implementation of ObamaCare easier at the state level.

Let’s hope Republicans don’t fall prey to Caldara’s first political axiom… and instead, stick to their principles in the face of these anti-freedom bills. With a Republican controlled house these can only pass if Republicans help.

Our unbelievable cartoonist Ben Hummel has been cranking out great work for us for almost two years now. Unlike my days as a cartoonist drawing my strip called B Street, Ben can actually draw, spell, and be funny. It’s almost like Ben is the Kyle Orton to my Jay Cutler. Anyway, he’s produced some fantastic t-shirts with perhaps his most well-known ‘toon “Political Correctness” as the centerpiece. If you are still searching for that perfect gift for your own politically incorrect family member, friend, or co-worker, pick up a shirt from Ben here.

A note on shipping from Ben:

Shipping is standard USPS, slow boat, if you will, at $4.50 per shirt. If orders are made (I know that this is cutting it close) by December 17th, I can at least have the shirts produced by Christmas. Denver area customers may have to pick up the orders by hand, as USPS probably won’t get it there on time.
